Addressing Disaster Preparedness in Puerto Rico
In the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria, Puerto Rico has faced significant challenges in disaster preparedness and resilience. The island's geographical location in the Caribbean makes it particularly susceptible to severe weather events, with over 80% of the population living in coastal areas vulnerable to flooding and storm surges. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Puerto Rico experiences an average of 2.5 hurricanes annually, underscoring the urgent need for effective disaster readiness programs.
Communities across Puerto Rico, particularly in rural and underserved areas, are disproportionately affected by these disasters. Many residents lack access to timely information on emergency procedures and recovery resources. Vulnerable populationssuch as the elderly, those with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged householdsface heightened risks during emergencies due to limited mobility, inadequate access to communication channels, and a lack of financial resources to prepare in advance.
