Grant Overview

Capacity Building for Puerto Rican Coffee Exporters

In Puerto Rico, the coffee industry faces significant challenges that impede its export potential. According to the Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture, local coffee producers are hampered by outdated farming techniques and a lack of access to essential resources, leading to a decrease in the quality and volume of coffee available for export. On top of this, severe climatic events in recent years have disrupted production, further exacerbating the problems within this important agricultural sector. The unique geographical challenges, including mountainous terrain and limited transportation options, only add to the obstacles faced by coffee exporters in the region.

The barriers to success are not uniform, as smallholder farmers often struggle the most. Many of these farmers operate on plots of land that are less than an acre, producing insufficient quantities to meet export standards. Furthermore, these producers may lack the necessary connections to international markets, leaving them reliant on local buyers who may not pay competitive prices. As Puerto Rico continues to recover from both natural disasters and economic decline, these small producers risk being left behind in a highly competitive global market.

This grant aims to address the pressing issues faced by Puerto Rican coffee producers by providing capacity-building workshops focused on quality control and international market standards. The workshops will be designed to equip local farmers with the skills needed to enhance their production processes and meet the expectations of global consumers. By improving their capacity to produce high-quality coffee, farmers will not only increase their export potential but also uplift their local economies and communities.

Furthermore, the program seeks to establish cooperative partnerships among coffee farmers, allowing them to pool resources and collaborate on marketing efforts. These cooperatives can provide shared access to training, equipment, and financial resources, greatly enhancing their ability to compete in the international market. The expected outcome of this initiative is a substantial increase in the volume of high-quality coffee exports, positively impacting local farmers and revitalizing Puerto Rico’s traditional coffee industry.

With this funding, Puerto Rican coffee producers will be empowered to overcome their inherent disadvantages and secure a stronger foothold in the global coffee market. As these farmers implement new practices and engage in cooperative strategies, the long-term economic benefits will extend not only to individual farmers but also to the local economies they support, contributing to the overall resilience of the Puerto Rican agricultural sector.
